Eddie from the United Kingdom is better known in the F1 Fantasy community as McGeezer, the runner-up in the 2022 Global League. To prepare players with the tips and resources to succeed in 2024, I had the pleasure of chatting with Eddie about his rise to the top and which Grand Prix he chose as his prize for dominating the Global League.
FanAmp: What was it like after Abu Dhabi knowing that you had the #2 team in the world out of 1.6 million?
McGeezer: Surreal, and probably one of my greatest achievements in life to date (as sad as that sounds). It was actually my first season playing which just made it even crazier.
FanAmp: What was the prize for 2nd place last year?
McGeezer: Two tickets to a race of my choice, which I chose to be my home race - Silverstone!
FanAmp: How did your team make it to the top? Did you start off strong or make a late lunge?
McGeezer: It wasn’t really either - I started off pretty average and just gradually kept climbing. I remember being like oh, I’m top 10k, that’s pretty cool, oh, I’m top 1000, that’s great, oh I’m top 100, top 50, etc. It wasn't until I entered the top 10 after Japan that I really thought it could happen.
FanAmp: Do you remember a pivotal moment that really shot your team up the rankings?
McGeezer: Two moments spring to mind - the Sprint in Austria where I took a risk on both Haas drivers and ended up with the highest possible score for that week, and then Japan when I played my 3X DRS Boost on Verstappen which put me inside the top 10!
FanAmp: How did you handle the last few weeks of the season once you were at the top of the rankings? Did you play conservatively to stay at the top or get more aggressive to try and catch the team in first place?
McGeezer: I used to be a much more aggressive fantasy player, but have got progressively more conservative over the years. I was actually in 1st place for a couple weeks leading into the final race, so I was the one defending but unfortunately got overtaken at the death. My strategy didn’t really change, I just always try and pick the best team within my budget and available transfers for any given week, and what will be will be.
FanAmp: When you played in 2023, which elements of your strategy from 2022 still worked and which ones went out the window with the new rules?
McGeezer: I think the biggest change was how to look at budget drivers due to the addition of overtake points, favoring those who would qualify lower with the potential to make their way through the field. Quite often having 3 free transfers (which I would change if I was in charge) also meant there was no real need to plan ahead, so that element basically went out the window. Otherwise, the same fundamentals always apply, and you just hope the luck goes your way!
FanAmp: What fantasy tools, websites, and advice do you follow when making your lineup decisions?
McGeezer: Paying attention to free practice, team form/upgrades, and to a lesser extent previous constructor/driver results at a particular track - all of these are not gospel by any means, but can sometimes help to point in the right direction. I’m a big fan of data/analytics, so I always take a look at F1 Fantasy Tools and Elevenify/FFTrout’s models [these can be found on the Discord for F1 Fantasy Tracker]. The F1 website also does some good qualifying and race pace simulations following Friday’s action. There’s a lot of great information on Twitter, however I generally try to stay away from opinions as they ultimately just add noise and cloud your judgement.
