Oscar Piastri overtook Max Verstappen's Red Bull to score his 3rd win of the season in Saudi Arabia
All of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit came alive under the lights of the pit lane. Here's what happened in round five of the 2025 Formula 1 calendar:
- As the race began, Max Verstappen ran wide on the first turn to stay ahead of Oscar Piastri. By going off the track he gained an advantage and because he held onto the place the stewards hit him with a 5-second penalty
- At the same time, Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly collided, leaving the Alpine ruined on track while the Red Bull limped back to the pit lane as the safety car was deployed. Red Bull examined Yuki's car and found it had to be retired. Because they failed to meet the minimum racing distance, neither driver will be classified this race
- McLaren was first to pit which prompted Max to stay out on track and push his pace. That gave Verstappen a few additional laps on the medium tire before switching to fresher hards. He also served the penalty during the stop to level the playing field
- Gabriel Bortoleto ran across the track trying to get ahead of Liam Lawson, almost colliding with Fernando Alonso who was running along the wall. The Spaniard sounded extremely relieved on the radio that there was no damage
- Lando Norris ran a long first stint on the hard tires, finding great pace even 30+ laps in. He pitted for fresh mediums after lap 34 while his teammate regained the race lead
- Kimi Antonelli clipped the wall with his Mercedes but was able to keep going
- Liam Lawson received a 10-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. The difference between his penalty and the one Verstappen received for the same action is likely due to it happening much later in the race when cars were not grouped together
- Lance Stroll and Gabriel Bortoleto caused some grief for Piastri who was stuck behind them for a period of time when it counted, shrinking his lead over Max Verstappen who was 3-seconds behind
- George Russell radioed on lap 48 that his tire degredation was getting out of control, asking his race engineer if they had any concerns with the tire making it to the end
- In the end, Oscar Piastri's McLaren was in top-form and took the checkered flag, earning the Australian driver his 3rd win of the 2025 Formula 1 season and the top position in the Drivers' Championship standings
- Charles Leclerc came in P3 behind Verstappen, securing Ferrari's first podium of the season
