Many F1 Fantasy players consider the Extra DRS Boost the easiest of the six chips to use as it closely resembles the DRS Boost available to players every week. Let's break down everything we know about this chip and share an example of how it works.
What is it?
As with the other chips, the Extra DRS Boost can only be played once per season. This chip triples the score of any one driver for an entire race weekend. The DRS Boost that teams receive every weekend can be applied to a different driver to double their score for the weekend as well.
When is the best time to use the Extra DRS Boost?
Two situations provide the best value for the Extra DRS Boost: Sprint weekends and whenever a top driver starts at the back of the grid. Sprint weekends feature three scoring events (Sprint, Grand Prix Qualifying, and Grand Prix) and generate more fantasy points for this chip to triple. The two highest fantasy scores from 2024, Max Verstappen's 58 points in China and all-time record 77 points in Brazil, were both achieved on Sprint weekends.
Charles Leclerc provided the best example of a driver starting at the back of the grid. He started the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix P19 and soared to a remarkable P3 finish. His 16 positions gained and 14 overtakes led to a well-deserved Driver of the Day award and a season-high 55 fantasy points. Elite drivers that fail to advance past Q1 or take an engine penalty provide great upside for the Extra DRS Boost.
An example of the Extra DRS Boost
Here is an example of the Extra DRS Boost in use at the 2024 United States Grand Prix (a Sprint weekend). The chip tripled the score of Lando Norris, and the standard DRS Boost doubled the score of Oscar Piastri.
Is there anything else players should know about the Extra DRS Boost?
Players typically apply the Extra DRS Boost to their top driver and move the DRS Boost to their second best driver. For the next race, the DRS Boost will start the week on the second best driver (Piastri in the example above) so remember to move it back to your top driver since many forget to take this step.
