Lando Norris topped the only free practice session at the Shanghai International Circuit ahead of the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc and his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri
The first sprint race weekend of the 2025 Formula 1 season is underway! We are back at the Shanghai International Circuit where the drivers took to the track for the first and only practice session of the weekend. The is the second race in the double header, following the Australian Grand Prix which was won by McLaren's Lando Norris. Completing the podium was the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and the Mercedes of George Russell. Some notable moment from the 2025 Australian Grand Prix was Kimi Antonelli scoring his first Formula 1 points to come in P4 for Mercedes. Originally he lost the position due to a post-race penalty, but that was later revoked and his P4 finish was re-installed to the dismay of the Williams of Alex Albon. Albon had a very impressive race to finish in P5. Nico Hulkenberg brought home points for Stake and finished ahead of the two Ferrari drivers. The teams are now preparing for the Chinese Grand Prix, here is what happened in Free Practice 1:
- Despite the excitment of the Chinese Grand Prix, the weekend started off on a somber note after it was announced that Eddie Jordan passed away after his long fought battle with cancer
- Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones
- Jack Doohan is the only rookie who has raced at the Shanghai International Circuit previously in his career
- The young Australian raced in China when he was competing in the Asian F3 championship, but the other four rookies have yet to drive the track so this practice session will be crucial for them
- Lando Norris comes into the Chinese Grand Prix weekend leading the Drivers' Championship for the first time in his Formula 1 career
- The weather is looking to be much drier than the Australian Grand Prix weekend
- Conditions are perfect, despite certain areas on track that are quite exposed to the wind
- Kimi Antonelli is looking very comfortable in his Mercedes
- The prodigal Italian driver finished FP1 in P9
- Charles Leclerc had a big moment with 20 minutes left in the session
- The Ferrari driver spun off at Turn 3 but was able to regain control and make his way back on track
- The Monegasque driver didn't pit, so the spin didn't seem to effect the car or the data
- Just like his teammate, Lewis Hamilton had a big moment while entering the pit lane
- Jack Doohan brought out the Red Flag with 13 minutes left in the session
- The Australian claimed to have lost power steering in the car
- He parked his Alpine on the side of the track so the marshals are able to collect it and bring it back to the pit lane
- Lando Norris topped the only practice session in Shanghai ahead of Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri
