Why McLaren ordered Piastri to stay behind Norris

McLaren ordered Oscar Piastri to stay behind Lando Norris in the Australian Grand Prix due to concerns over lapped cars and changing weather conditions. Piastri was closing in on Norris and believed he was faster, but the team briefly paused the internal battle until they had clarity on the situation. Once the weather and backmarker risks were assessed, McLaren allowed them to race again, but by then, Piastri had lost ground after running wide. Team boss Andrea Stella defended the decision, pointing out that both drivers had been making small mistakes in tricky conditions.

Ferrari struggling to match McLaren’s “unbelievable” pace

Ferrari’s SF-25 is too slow, as McLaren, Mercedes, and Red Bull all showed better pace in dry and wet conditions. A poor strategy left Ferrari with just five points in Melbourne, while Lando Norris won the race and only a spin kept Oscar Piastri off the podium. Charles Leclerc admitted that Ferrari is behind, saying McLaren was much stronger and that his team must improve before Shanghai. Fred Vasseur remains hopeful, but it is unclear if Ferrari knows how to fix their problems.

Winners and losers from Australian GP

The Australian Grand Prix started chaotically with a pre-race crash, unpredictable rain, and dramatic late-race twists that shook up the expected results. Oscar Piastri looked set for a breakthrough victory but spun off in the closing laps, while Max Verstappen salvaged second place despite Red Bull struggling with pace. Ferrari flopped in wet conditions again, with strategy blunders and a lack of competitiveness leaving Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz frustrated. Meanwhile, Lando Norris claimed an early championship lead, rookie Kimi Antonelli impressed with a charge from 17th to fourth, and Williams, Sauber, and Aston Martin capitalized on the chaos, while Racing Bulls, Alpine, and Liam Lawson suffered disastrous outings.

Being an Aussie in F1

What's the toughest part of being from Australia while competing in Formula One? For Piastri, it's the distance—he rarely sees his family and friends. Even when they come to some of his races, he's too focused on the competition to do more than say a quick 'hi' and 'good luck.' But what's his favorite thing about Melbourne?
