Pierre Gasly led the first practice session of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend as the sun set in Jeddah
We're back in Jeddah for the first practice of the weekend! Here's what happened as the afternoon sun settled on the high speed twists and turns:
- Oscar Piastri's papaya McLaren clipped the wall with the rear right but the team dismissed the situation as a nonissue. The Australian driver was quickly back out on track setting purple sectors
- Max Verstappen reported understeer on his car, saying he was unable to turn in low-speed corners 1 and 2
- Carlos Sainz was in good spirits about the setup of his Williams, and with less than 24 minutes left in the session he was sitting in P5 on the timesheet behind Pierre Gasly, the McLarens, and George Russell
- While Pierre Gasly put his Alpine at the top of the timing pylon, his teammate Jack Doohan struggled. AWS track dominance showed Jack was slower than Pierre in all but one small section of the track
- Alex Brundle reported from the pit lane during the session that Ferrari was working through a wide range of rear- and front-wing options to figure out the optimal set up around the circuit
- Isack Hadjar struggled to put together a soft tire fast lap until the final two minutes of the session. He had been sitting at the bottom of the timesheet behind fellow rookie Gabriel Bortoleto until his final lap put him in P15
- George Russell crossed the line reporting a strange feeling under braking. He told the team he would back out of his lap
