The No Negative Chip: Explained | F1 Fantasy Guide (2024)

F1 Fantasy players often question how the No Negative chip works and how to tell if it took effect. Let's break down everything we know about the No Negative chip so you can maximize your fantasy team's performance this season.

What is it?

As a reminder, all six chips can only be played once per season. For every driver and constructor on your team, any scoring category that finishes the race weekend with negative points will be set to zero. This can occur if a driver loses positions during the Grand Prix or does not classify (DNF with fewer than 90% of the race distance completed).

To understand the true value of the No Negative chip, it's important to know how it worked in 2023 before F1 significantly enhanced its value. In that season, the No Negative chip only prevented all drivers and constructors from scoring fewer than zero total points in a race weekend. The issue with this system was that negative points commonly stem from DNFs (-20 points) and losing grid places between qualifying and the Grand Prix (-1 point per place lost). These scenarios are hard to predict and top drivers often finished with greater than zero points since qualifying position, finishing position, and overtakes add up quickly. Many players squandered this chip and pushed for more value in 2024.

When is the best time to use No Negative?

The best time to use No Negative is either on a rainy weekend or saving it for the second half of the season, when reliability issues and hot temperatures impact drivers the most.

What does a result with No Negative look like?

Consider the example below from the VCARB constructor at the Bahrain Grand Prix. They scored 3 points for both drivers reaching Q2 and 6 points from overtakes, however VCARB lost 2 positions in the race which normally subtracts 2 points from the constructor's score. Teams that ran VCARB but did not use No Negative scored 7 points (3 + 6 - 2). Since the No Negative chip sets any scoring category with negative points to zero, the Race Positions Lost category appears crossed out and VCARB scored 9 points.

This chip affects all drivers and constructors with negative scoring categories for a single race weekend.
