Oscar Piastri secured his first ever pole position in Formula 1 for the Chinese Grand Prix ahead of George Russell and his teammate, Lando Norris
We are back at the Shanghai International Circuit for the official qualifying session of the Grand Prix weekend. Lewis Hamilton secured pole and the win in the sprint race ahead of the McLaren of Oscar Piastri and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen. Yuki Tsunoda had a very solid sprint race to come home in P6 ahead of the Italian rookie, Kimi Antonelli. Jack Doohan had a difficult sprint race to finish the session in P20 behind the Stake of Nico Hulkenberg. Carlos Sainz had a sub-optimal sprint race as well, finishing in P17 while his teammate, Alex Albon, finished the session in P11. See who claimed pole position for the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday:
Q1
- Lewis Hamilton looked strong throughout Q1 after securing the win in the sprint race
- Liam Lawson was visibly struggling with his Red Bull as he was only able to finish the session in P20
- The young New Zealander finished the sprint race in P14 after qualifying for it in P19
- Nico Hulkenberg started the sprint from the pit lane and was only able to put his stake in P19
- That didn't stop the driver from getting his car into Q2 during the official qualifying session
- Gabriel Bortoleto had his worst qualifying result to come in P19 ahead of Liam Lawson
- Both of the Alpine drivers were eliminated from Q1 with Jack Doohan finishing in P18 and Pierre Gasly finishing in P16
- Ollie Bearman was out-qualified by his teammate, Esteban Ocon, who made it into Q2 despite the young Brit only putting his Haas in P17
Q2
- Carlos Sainz seemed to struggle in his Williams, only putting his car in P15 on the grid, despite Alex Albon, making it into Q3
- Both of the Aston Martin drivers had a difficult qualifying session with both Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso being eliminated in Q2
- Nico Hulkenberg finally out-qualified his teammate, Gabriel Bortoleto, but was only able to put his Stake in P12 on the grid for the Grand Prix
- Lewis Hamilton looked to have a difficult qualifying session and it was unclear if the sprint winner would make it out of Q2
- The renowned driver found himself making it into Q3 despite his challenges earlier in the session
Q3
- Isack Hadjar and Yuki Tsunoda both made it into Q3 for the Racing Bulls
- Hadjar finished the session in P7 and Tsunoda put his Racing Bull in P9 for the Grand Prix
- Kimi Antonelli's first flying lap time got deleted, leaving the Italian without a time on the board for the final 3 minutes
- Antonelli ended up putting his Mercedes in P8 on the grid
- Oscar Piastri claimed his first ever pole position ahead of George Russell and his teammate, Lando Norris
