Lando Norris secured pole position in Melbourne ahead of his teammate, Oscar Piastri during the first qualifying session of the 2025 Formula 1 season
Australia's very own, Oscar Piastri, led the troops in Free Practice 3 ahead of George Russell and Max Verstappen. Unlike his teammate, Liam Lawson had a nightmare of a practice session as he spent the majority of it in the garage trying to sort out a mechanical issue. Ollie Bearman has had some troubles with his Haas after he brought out the red flag for a second time this weekend because he beached his car at Turn 11 in FP3. Both of the Williams drivers are looking very strong out on track as well. Pole position is really anyone's game here at the Australian Grand Prix, find out what happened in the session:
Q1
- Ollie Bearman wasn't able to make it out of the pit lane after his mechanics had to fix his car
- He will start the Grand Prix in P20, just behind his teammate, Esteban Ocon, who also had a nightmare of a qualifying session
- Liam Lawson was struggling out on track
- The young New Zealander went off the track twice and jeopardized his chances of making it out of Q1
- Kimi Antonelli was pushed out of Q1 by the Sauber car of Gabriel Bortoleto by a mere 0.007s
- Bortoleto also out-qualified his teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, who will start the Grand Prix in P17
- Both of the Haas drivers, Liam Lawson, Nico Hulkenberg and Kimi all were eliminated in Q1
Q2
- McLaren looked very strong in Q2 with both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri leading the second part of qualifying
- Gabriel Bortoleto had a very close moment at the end of Q2. It was almost disastrous but the young Brazilian was able to recover it despite the incident ruining his last chances of getting into the top ten
- Fernando Alonso struggled in Q2 and only had one chance to set a time in the session
- The Spainiard will start the Grand Prix in P12
- Isack Hadjar's impressive qualifying session came to an end with the young driver putting his Racing Bull in P11 on the grid for the Grand Prix
- Both of the Aston Martin drivers were eliminated with Alonso out-qualifying Lance Stroll
- Jack Doohan's first qualifying session with Alpine was a success with the Australian putting his car in P14 for his home race
- Pierre Gasly made it into Q3
Q3
- Lando Norris had his first lap time deleted in the initial stages of the Q3 session
- Alex Albon had a very strong qualifying session to put his Williams in P6 ahead of Carlos Sainz who will start the Grand Prix in P10
- Yuki Tsunoda secured his best ever qualifying in Albert Park to put his Racing Bull in P5
- Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris locked out the front row with Norris claiming pole ahead of his teammate
