Oscar Piastri leads McLaren to a 1-2 finish in Shanghai after the Australian started the Grand Prix from pole position
Oscar Piastri secured the first pole position of his Formula 1 career during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend in Shanghai. The Australian driver will be starting the race ahead of the Mercedes of George Russell and his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris. Piastri has had a solid race weekend in Shanghai, securing P3 in the sprint qualifying and going on to take P2 in the sprint race, securing solid points for his team, McLaren. Sprint winner, Lewis Hamilton, had a very strong Saturday to start the sprint race from pole position and secure the win ahead of the McLaren of Piastri and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen. The Brit started the Grand Prix from P5 on the grid, ahead of his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc. Liam Lawson has been struggling in his Red Bull, only qualifying in P20 for the Grand Prix, and ending up needing to start from the Pit Lane after changes were made to his car under Parc Ferme. - Oscar Piastri held his position in P1 ahead of his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris and the Mercedes of George Russell
- Max Verstappen was quick to jump on the radio and alert everyone that the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc was suffering from a damaged front wing
- This was due to contact with his teammate, Lewis Hamilton
- Fernando Alonso's woes continued in his Aston Martin
- On Lap 4, the Spaniard's brakes caught on fire, resulting in an early retirement from the Grand Prix
- Alonso retired from the race on Lap 6
- The Stake of Gabriel Bortoleto was seen spinning out into the gravel
- The rookie was able to continue on but had to pit prematurely to change his tires
- Alex Albon was seen leading the Grand Prix on Lap 16 after all the drivers in front of him opted to pit for new tires
- On Lap 35 of the race, the teams started expecting and preparing for the small chance of rain
- Max Verstappen was not looking comfortable in his Red Bull
- The Dutch driver started the race in P4 but was seeming to not make up any ground during the Grand Prix
- Verstappen finished the race in P4
- Ollie Bearman was on the hunt during the Grand Prix
- The Brit started the race in P17 and finished in P10 , securing a solid amount of points for Haas
- His teammate, Esteban Ocon, finished the race in P7
- Charles Leclerc raced the entirety of the Chinese Grand Prix with a broken front wing after making contact with his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, on Lap 1 of the race
- Yuki Tsunoda had to pit on Lap 47 after his front wing suddenly broke on the main straight, breaking under the down force
- Jack Doohan and Isack Hadjar were noted for an issue
- Doohan received a ten second time penalty for forcing a driver off the track
- Oscar Piastri claimed the victory in Shanghai ahead of his teammate, Lando Norris, to secure a 1-2 finish for McLaren
- George Russell rounded out the top three to take P3 for Mercedes
Post-race disqualifications:
- The action continued off-track with post-race technical procedures revealing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Alpine's Pierre Gasly to both be underweight. Both teams agreed to the decision without challenge
- In Lewis Hamilton's case, Ferrari agreed that a misconfigured set up led to excessive wear on his rearward skids
- These actions knocked both Ferrari drivers out of the points and keeps Alpine as the only team yet to score this season
