The drivers finished their final practice of the 2024 Formula 1 season. See what happened in the session and who looks strong ahead of qualifying in Abu Dhabi
Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris topped FP1 and FP2 in Abu Dhabi ahead of their fight for P2 in the drivers championship. It was announced that Charles Leclerc will recieve a 10-place grid penalty for the Grand Prix for using too many energy store units throughout the season. This will have major implications for his fight for P2 and Ferrari's fight for P1 in the constructor's championship. Ferrari and McLaren are separated by 21 points, and the fight will be very close throughout the entire race. See what happened in the session and who looks to have the upper hand in the battle:
- Charles Leclerc has a 10-place grid penalty for the Grand Prix for using too many enery store units
- Franco Colapinto and Alex Albon have both received 5-place grid penalties for the Grand Prix after taking new gearboxes
- Red Bull was showing zero pace in the first and second free practice sessions
- There are also rumours of Liam Lawson being the driver to replace Sergio Perez for the 2025 season
- Jack Doohan is driving in replacement of Esteban Ocon for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Alpine announced this replacement folllowing the conclusion of the Qatar Grand Prix
- Ocon is set to drive for Haas for 2025 while Doohan will drive for Alpine alongside Pierre Gasly
- Jack Doohan was seemingly struggling with grip throughout the final corner of the Yas Marina Circuit
- Carlos Sainz looked to have some smoke coming out of his engine
- He headed to the pit lane immediately but was able to come back out on track shortly after
- George Russell was saying that his Mercedes is feeling fine but he just looks like he's lacking pace
- Lewis Hamilton was on the radio asking his team where is pace is and where he's losing time and Mercedes did not have an answer for him
- Oscar Piastri topped the session ahead of his teammate, Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton
