Of the six chips in F1 Fantasy, Limitless often raises the most questions on social media about how it works. When used effectively it can produce one of the highest scores of the season. Let's break down everything we know about the Limitless chip.
What is it?
As with the other chips, Limitless can only be played once per season. This chip unlocks after a team has completed one race weekend. It provides two advantages for a single race weekend:
- Unlimited free transfers
- No cost cap, so players can select the best assets in the game
When is the best time to use it?
Limitless delivers the most points over a normal lineup in two cases, as brilliantly illustrated in a thread by F1 Fantasy Tools. The first is on a normal weekend where the top 5 drivers are easily predictable, with the same names finishing atop the Free Practice sessions and consensus among betting lines and the Practice Debrief simulations on F1.com. This case also requires a low overtake environment, otherwise midfield drivers could collect overtakes and outscore an elite driver.
Alternatively, Sprint weekends allow players to observe Sprint Qualifying before locking their lineups. If multiple frontrunners qualify low, they stand to gain positions in the Sprint plus these weekends include three scoring events to accrue points (Sprint, Grand Prix Qualifying, and Grand Prix). At the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Sergio Perez all started the Sprint lower than expected. These drivers gained positions and the ideal Limitless team scored a massive 456 points.
An example of the Limitless chip
The example below comes from the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. This is the lineup of that team from the previous race (China):
After selecting the chip, four substitutions were made to form a new lineup: Verstappen, Perez, Leclerc, Sainz, Norris, Red Bull, and Ferrari. This lineup normally costs $167.7M even though this team's cost cap was $107.2M - what a deal!
The team posted a solid result at the end of the weekend:
Which lineup is impacted by value changes?
Perhaps the biggest question about the Limitless chip pertains to value changes. On Sunday night after the final scores were tallied, this team reverted back to its Chinese Grand Prix lineup and value changes were applied to those assets. Any transfers made before applying Limitless were ignored since the chip reverts to the previous race weekend, not the last lineup before selecting Limitless.
A quick word about free transfers
Some strategists elect to roll an unused free transfer into a future weekend, expanding their free transfer maximum from 2 to 3. If a team carries 3 free transfers and uses Limitless, they will drop back to 2 free transfers for the following race.
