Chip Ganassi Racing is an iconic team, home to many legendary IndyCar Series Champions, and has become one of the most successful teams in American Motorsports.
Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) is one of the most successful and renowned teams in American motorsport. Founded by Chip Ganassi in 1990, the team has consistently been a dominant force among open-wheel racing. Known for its strong engineering, innovative strategies, and a history of acquiring top-performing drivers, CGR has earned multiple championship wins and victories at the Indianapolis 500. With success in IndyCar, NASCAR, IMSA SportsCar Championship, and Extreme E, Chip Ganassi has built an empire in the world of motorsports.
What is the history of Chip Ganassi Racing?
Chip Ganassi Racing was founded by former IndyCar driver Chip Ganassi in 1990 when he became the sole owner of Emerson Fittipaldi’s Marlboro IndyCar team, renaming it Chip Ganassi Racing. The team competed in the CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) championship until 2002 when they moved into the Indy Racing League. Ganassi won four consecutive series championships in CART with drivers Jimmy Vasser, Alex Zanardi, and Juan Pablo Montoya.
Ganassi’s performance in the Indy Racing League was nothing short of competitive, with driver Scott Dixon winning three races and the series championship in his first season with the team. The CGR Team has stayed a dominant force in IndyCar since its founding, with their trophy case growing each year.
Chip Ganassi's Key Milestones and Achievements
IndyCar and CART Championships
CGR has won multiple IndyCar Series Championships, with its first title won in 1996 by driver Jimmy Vasser. Since then, the team has consistently been a force amongst the series, with a total of 16 championship titles (4 in CART, 12 in IndyCar) as of the 2024 season. A renowned name in IndyCar, Scott Dixon secured six of these championships, and newcomer Alex Palou took the championship trophy home in 2021, 2023, and 2024.
Indianapolis 500 Wins
In addition to its championship success, Chip Ganassi Racing has an impressive record at the Indianapolis 500. They have cemented their reputation as a powerhouse at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, taking home five victories over the years. Rookie Juan Pablo Montoya won this prestigious race for Ganassi during the team’s Indy Racing League debut in 2002, and legends Scott Dixon (2008) and Dario Franchitti (2010, 2012) appear on the Borg-Warner Trophy as well. Most recently, former driver of the No. 8 car, Marcus Ericsson decorated CGR with their fifth Indianapolis 500 win.
Notable CGR Drivers and Their Contributions
Chip Ganassi has had some of the most decorated drivers in IndyCar history. The team has always boasted a competitive lineup, with some of the most notable drivers being:
Jimmy Vasser (1995-2000)
Jimmy was the first driver to bring a major championship to CGR, winning the 1996 CART Championship. His title marked the beginning of Chip Ganassi Racing’s success in open-wheel racing and established the team as a top competitor in the sport.
Scott Dixon (2003-Present)
Scott has been the face of Chip Ganassi Racing since joining the team two decades ago. With six championship titles, Dixon contributed more wins to CGR than any other driver. A podium at the Hy-Vee Milwaukee Mile moved him past Mario Andretti for the record of most career IndyCar podiums with his 142nd.
Dario Franchitti (2008-2013)
Dario had a highly successful career with CGR, winning three consecutive IndyCar titles (2009, 2010, 2011) and two Indianapolis 500 victories. Franchitti’s contributions to the team solidified their dominance in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Alex Palou (2021 - Present)
Alex is the current star of the CGR team, winning 3 IndyCar titles (2021, 2023, and 2024) in the four years that he has been with the team. With the 2023 and 2024 title wins, he became the 2nd driver to win back to back titles after the aforementioned, Dario Franchitti.
Who are the current Chip Ganassi drivers and leadership?
Chip Ganassi
Chip Ganassi, the founder and owner of the team, remains the driving force behind the organization. In the 2024 season, Ganassi led the team’s drivers to many victories and yet another championship win. The CGR team had a powerful field of five drivers this past season: Kyffin Simpson, Linus Lundqvist, Scott Dixon, Alex Palou, and Marcus Armstrong.
2024 Rookies: Kyffin Simpson and Linus Lundqvist
The team welcomed two rookies to the 2024 lineup: driver of the No. 4 Journie Rewards Honda Kyffin Simpson and driver of the No. 8 The American Legion Honda Linus Lundqvist. Both drivers had a promising season, with Linus Lundqvist receiving the series Rookie of the Year award and finishing with 279 points. Simpson and Lundqvist are currently out of contract for the 2025 season.
Marcus Armstrong
Young driver of the No. 11 Ridgeline Lubricants Honda Marcus Armstrong competed in his sophomore season as a full-time driver for the first time. He picked up his first podium at Detroit, and another top five finish at Toronto. Armstrong will be joining Meyer Shank Racing after two seasons with CGR.
Scott Dixon
Driver of the iconic No. 9 PNC Bank Honda, Scott Dixon is widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in IndyCar history. Having been with the Chip Ganassi Team for over two decades, Dixon remains a key asset to the CGR legacy. Dixon was in the fight for the championship title during the 2024 season, but ultimately a few mechanical errors led to him finishing 6th.
Alex Palou
A newer, but not any less valuable, addition to the Ganassi team is Alex Palou, pilot of the No. 10 DHL Honda. Palou has been a leading contender of the championship since his debut, securing wins on road courses and ovals. His undoubted success has been proven by his IndyCar Championship wins in 2021, 2023, and most recently in 2024. Palou dominated the field, scoring 31 more points than championship contender Colton Herta.
Both Scott Dixon and Alex Palou have secured their spots with Chip Ganassi Racing for the 2025 IndyCar season, but the No. 8 is still up for grabs.
Chip Ganassi's Controversies
One of the biggest recent controversies for CGR involved their star driver Alex Palou. In July 2022, Palou was in the middle of a major contract dispute between Chip Ganassi Racing and McLaren Racing. Palou was announced to continue his contract with Ganassi for the 2023 season, but shortly after, he denied the extension and stated he would be joining McLaren. The situation quickly escalated into a legal battle over contract rights and CGR suing Palou because the driver did not follow his agreement with the team. Ultimately, the legal issue was resolved, and Palou remained the pilot of the Ganassi No. 10 DHL Honda, but tensions still linger within the team.
Chip Ganassi’s Future
Looking forward, Chip Ganassi Racing plans to downsize their line-up by two spots because of IndyCar’s introduction of the charter system. Dixon and Palou have been confirmed for the 2025 season, which leaves the No. 8 seat open for Simpson, Lundqvist, or a brand new contender. Despite having finished in 21st place in the championship, Kyffin Simpson has been rumored to take over the final spot on the team.
Regardless of who ends up completing the CGR 2025 line-up, Ganassi’s leadership and excellent strategy ensures that the team will remain a contender for championships and victories for years to come.
