AJ Foyt Racing - A name synonymous with IndyCar

AJ Foyt is a team and a name that has decades of history in IndyCar, born from the drive of its founder, A.J. Foyt—one of the most successful names in IndyCar.

AJ Foyt Racing, a name synonymous with American motorsport, is a team that has continuously fought for its place in the IndyCar Series. Born from the vision and relentless drive of its founder, A.J. Foyt—one of the most successful names in IndyCar—the team represents grit, tradition, and resilience. Over the years, while others have risen and fallen, AJ Foyt Racing has stood as an unwavering figure in the sport. Its story is not just about racing, but about the fearless spirit of competition.

What is the history of AJ Foyt Racing?

AJ Foyt Racing (also known as AJ Foyt Enterprises) was founded in 1965 by Anthony Joseph (A.J.) Foyt Jr. Foyt was not only the owner of the team, he was the backbone of the team’s early success in the USAC National Championship and IndyCar Series. The team was quick to show their success, winning three USAC championship titles (1967, 1975, and 1979) and two Indianapolis 500s (1967 and 1977), all with Foyt behind the wheel. AJ Foyt Racing fielded cars in the USAC National Champion until 1979, when the team switched to the CART Series.

The team had Foyt as their primary driver, picking up numerous top-five finishes, before a tragic accident led to his retirement in 1993. Although the team never saw a first-place finish in the CART Series, this was quick to change after transitioning to the IndyCar Series Championship. Foyt Enterprises’ Scott Sharp and Kenny Brӓck brought titles home in 1996 and 1998, respectively. This was just the beginning of Foyt’s leadership outside of the car, with many more champions to come.

AJ Foyt's Key Milestones and Achievements

A powerhouse behind the wheel, A.J. Foyt made history under the leadership of his own team by winning his third and fourth Indianapolis 500s. Just two years after founding AJ Foyt Racing in 1965, Foyt brought it home at the Brickyard for the third time, making it one of the early defining moments for his team. In 1977, Foyt secured another 500 win in the No. 14 car, becoming the first driver in history to win the race four times. Foyt cemented nothing short of a legacy for the beginning of his team.

The No. 14 car continued to be a powerhouse with driver Kenny Brӓck behind the wheel. Brӓck was one of the team’s most successful drivers, securing four first place finishes in his two seasons with the team. He delivered the team their third Indy 500 win in 1999, a bright moment for the team in the late 1990s. After joining the team in 2013, Takuma Sato won AJ Foyt Racing their first road-course win in decades at the Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Notable AJ Foyt Drivers and Their Contributions

A.J. Foyt (1965 - 1979)

A.J. Foyt spent a part of his remarkable motorsports career behind the wheel of his own team’s car. He became a regular fixture in the winner’s circle, securing his third and history-making fourth win at the Indianapolis 500. Though not just an incredible driver, Foyt was dedicated to building something bigger than himself. Over decades, he has passed the torch to new talent, determined to continue the legacy of AJ Foyt Racing.

Kenny Brӓck (1998 - 1999)

Kenny Brӓck had a short but influential career with AJ Foyt Enterprises. He earned the team one of the most notable post-Foyt successes, winning the 1999 Indianapolis 500. His four wins in his brief time with the team set the stage against larger, more dominant teams like Penske and Andretti Autosport.

Takuma Sato (2013 - 2016)

Takuma Sato brought the team back into competitive contention with a win in his third race with the team at the 2013 Grand Prix of Long Beach. This made Sato the first Japanese driver to win an IndyCar race. He continued being a powerhouse over the years, scoring six top-five finishes, including two podiums and two pole positions.

Santino Ferrucci (2023 - Present)

Santino Ferrucci is the current pilot of the iconic No. 14 car. In his first full time IndyCar season since 2020, Ferrucci finished third in the 2023 Indianapolis 500, the best finish of an AJ Foyt car since 2000. He had another top-ten finish at the 2024 Indianapolis 500, and shows a promising future for himself and the team.

Who are the current AJ Foyt Drivers and Leadership?

Larry Foyt

AJ Foyt Enterprises is currently managed by the adopted son and biological grandson of A.J. Foyt, Larry Foyt. Larry took over as president in 2007, with aims to continue the Foyt legacy. His leadership has brought fresh strategies, focusing on technology advancements, driver development, and stronger sponsorships to push the team forward.

Santino Ferrucci

Santino Ferrucci is the current young superstar of AJ Foyt Racing. Since joining the team in 2023, he has brought grit and fearlessness to the No.14 car. In his first season with the team, he took home a podium at the Brickyard, and Ferrucci continued this strong performance with a top-ten finish at the 2024 Indianapolis 500. His aggressive, no-nonsense, driving style led to his remarkable 2024 season. Ferrucci had 11 top-ten finishes this past season and delivered the team its first pole since 2014 at the Grand Prix of Portland. He finished the season 9th in standings, and is expected to help further rejuvenate the AJ Foyt Racing team in 2025.

David Malukas

A rising star in IndyCar, David Malukas is signed with AJ Foyt Racing to drive the No. 41 car for the 2025 season and beyond. He has made a significant mark for himself in IndyCar, with notable performances in his early seasons with Dayle Coyne Racing. Although he was signed with Arrow McLaren for the 2024 season, a mountain biking accident led to him being released from the team in late April after missing four races. Malukas made a quick comeback, driving for Meyer Shank Racing from June onwards. Even with a recovering hand and wrist, he managed to maximize his performance in the 2024 season with two top-ten finishes. Malukas’ multi-year deal with AJ Foyt Racing gives rise to a bright future for his career and the A.J. Foyt Team.

Sting Ray Robb

Driver of the No. 41 car for the 2024 season, Sting Ray Robb is a fresh face in the IndyCar series. Joining AJ Foyt Racing in only his second IndyCar season, Robb showed perseverance and a willingness to learn how to make a name for himself. Robb finished 16th in the 2024 Indianapolis 500, and had a top-ten finish later in the season at Gateway. A few incidents throughout the year and a crash in the last lap at the Hy-Vee Homefront at Iowa made for a rough season, with Robb ending 20th in the standings. Sting Ray will not be joining AJ Foyt Racing for the 2025 season, his successor being David Malukas.

AJ Foyt Racing’s Future

AJ Foyt Racing’s future looks promising, with a new technical partnership with Team Penske introduced in the 2023 season. This technical alliance allows for not only assistance with car parts and strategy, but for the future of both AJ Foyt Racing and Team Penske. In coming years, it is anticipated that Penske will place younger crew and engineering staff within the Foyt team to gain experience. Along those lines, Penske hopes to sign up-and-coming Indy NXT drivers like Myles Rowe to the Foyt team, with preparations of them running a sort of “development driver” team.

Foyt’s driver line-up for the 2025 season is set to be a force on the grid, and it seems it isn’t long before AJ Foyt Racing has the dominance and competition of similar leading teams like Andretti Global and Team Penske.
