The Wildcard Chip: Explained | F1 Fantasy Guide (2024)

The Wildcard chip returns for a third straight year in 2024 to give players unlimited transfers before lineups lock. Let's review how this single-use chip works so you can get the most value out of it this season.

What is it?

Like the other chips in the game, Wildcard is only available once per season. This chip unlocks after a team has completed one race weekend. Normally, the game provides two transfers per week, and one can be carried to the next race for a maximum of three free transfers. Once all free transfers have been used, each substitution triggers a ten-point penalty. From the time lineups open until qualifying, Wildcard grants players unlimited free transfers.

When is the best time to use Wildcard?

If a constructor makes a huge upgrade and starts to contend for podiums (e.g. McLaren at Austria and Silverstone in 2023), it may take four or five transfers to afford both drivers and the constructor. To avoid the penalty for exceeding the transfer limit, consider playing the Wildcard chip.

An example of the Wildcard chip

After locking in the Wildcard, players can make unlimited transfers. When submitting lineup changes, a box will indicate that the Wildcard is in use and there are "infinite" free transfers remaining:

When looking at your lineup, you will see the Wildcard logo on the top (a pair of up and down arrows):

If you have multiple teams, you will notice the Wildcard team has ∞ Free Transfers whereas a normal team has a maximum of two or three transfers (depending on whether they carried an unused transfer from the previous race):
