Lando Norris on pole after holding off Max Verstappen in COTA qualifying. Norris to start ahead of Max and Carlos Sainz who finished P3 for the Grand Prix on Sunday.
The grid lit up for the second time today as everyone fought for race position tomorrow. Here's what happened:
- George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were both in the drop zone at the end of Q1. George was able to recover with a strong lap, but Lewis only put himself in 16th, ultimately dropping further in the standings and being eliminated with the likes of both Stake drivers, Alex Albon, and Williams rookie Franco Colapinto
- Lewis Hamilton's elimination marked the first time he's failed to qualify at COTA inside the top five in the eleven times he's taken part
- Liam Lawson had yet to set a lap time entering the final minutes of Q2 and it remained that way as the session closed. The New Zealand rookie never left the garage and will face a 60-place grid penalty for the race due to new parts over the allotment
- Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez both needed strong laps to stay in the mix after Q2 and were able to pull it off
- Kevin Magnussen was the lead Haas on the grid after eliminating his teammate Nico Hulkenberg in the final seconds of Q2
- Lando Norris nearly spun at Turn 19 on his first run in Q3 but recovered. Max Verstappen followed quickly behind and went a hair wide in the final turns. The minor error was just enough to cost him the lap to Lando Norris who had jumped to P1
- That lap time was enough for Lando Norris to clinch pole as George Russell crashed to trigger a safety car
