Max Verstappen secured the sprint race victory ahead of Carlos Sainz who passed Norris in final lap
Here's what you need to know from the first 'race' of the 2024 United States Grand Prix weekend:
- Alex Albon started from the pit lane after Williams made last minute configuration changes. Before the changes, he was supposed to start from P18
- Lando Norris jumped ahead of George Russell in the opening lap and held on, securing P2 behind Max Verstappen who had a clean start
- Magnussen was forced to give back a position after leaving the track and gaining an advantage over Yuki Tsunoda, however the Dane quickly repassed the Japanese driver
- Carlos Sainz was quickly followed by Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in overtaking George Russell. The Mercedes driver already had lost his P2 position at the very start of the race
- Oscar Piastri was given a 5 second time penalty for forcing Pierre Gasly off the track. The Australian started in P16 and gained 4 positions by the midpoint of the race. He cleared several other cars after the penalty which gave him enough clean air to mitigate the penalty
- Max Verstappen held on to P1 all the way from the start of the race to win over Carlos Sainz who took advantage of a late lockup for Lando Norris in the final lap to take P2
- Sergio Perez finished just outside the points in P9
