The drivers took to the track for Free Practice 1 in the city of Baku. This street circuit always provides excitement for the fans as it proves to be a difficult track for many of the teams. See who topped the timesheets for FP1:
- Ollie Bearman will be driving in replacement of Kevin Magnussen after Magnussen received a race ban because he exceeded the amount of penalty points allowed in one season
- The session was red flagged to allow the marshalls to clean up track debris
- It is suspected that the debris came from Franco Colapinto's car
- The red flag was about ten minutes long, leaving drivers with less time in Free Practice 1
- Esteban Ocon had an engine problem and had to head back into the pits
- It was looking like a hydraulics issue
- Ocon had to retire the car for the rest of the session
- Charles Leclerc went into the wall at Turn 15 which caused another red flag
- Despite causing the red flag, Leclerc has been leading the session and was the fastest driver out on track
- Franco Colapinto brought out the third red flag with 18 minutes left on the clock after hitting the wall at Turn 4
- The session resumed with ten minutes left
- Max Verstappen topped the session ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez
