Andy Cowell has had a very successful and lengthy career in the motorsport industry. The Brit studied mechanical engineering at university and has collected numerous accolades within Formula 1. Early Life and Education

Andy Cowell was born on February 12th, 1969 in Blackpool England. Cowell had an early interest in engineering and decided to pursue it in University. Cowell studied mechanical engineering at Lancaster University leading him to working with Cosworth, a British Engineering company who produce engines. 

Cowell worked mainly within the F1 engine division where he played an integral part in their partnership with Ford while also assisting McLaren and Benetton to securing Grand Prix wins throughout the 1990s. In the year 2000, Cowell left Cosworth to move to BMW Motorsport. Here he helped to design the engine that Williams used all throughout 2001. He then moved back to Cosworth to embody the role as Principal Engineer for their F1 programme where he managed numerous engine projects. 

In 2004, Andy Cowell, once again, left Cosworth to become the Principal Engineer at Mercedes-Ilmor. He transitioned into the role of Engineering Director for the Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines division between the years of 2008 to 2013. From there, Cowell became the Managing Director of the, then renamed Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains. 

2014 was a transformative year for Mercedes and Cowell as Formula 1 had introduced the turbo-hybrid regulations. Mercedes dominated the next few years and claimed the constructors’ and drivers championships with Lewis Hamilton. Cowell stuck with Mercedes until 2020, when he then parted ways with the team and moved to ‘Project Pitlane’ which was a collective of UK-based F1 teams who aimed to produce medical devices to treat COVID-19 patients amidst the pandemic.

In July of 2023, Aston Martin announced that Andy Cowell would be their new Group Chief Executive Officer, replacing Martin Whitmarsh. In this role, Cowell was reporting directly to Lawrence Stroll, the Executive Chairman of Aston Martin. 

In January of 2025, it was announced that Andy Cowell would be replacing Mike Krack as the Aston Martin Team Principal for the upcoming season. Mike Krack is stepping into more of a trackside role, while Cowell will be leading the team which has Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll as their two drivers.

Cowell stayed in this role until it was announced in 2025 that he would be replacing Mike Krack as the new Aston Martin Team Principal.
