Replacing one of Formula 1’s biggest personalities and his rise from Engineering Director to Team Principal

Ayao Komatsu, born on January 28th 1976, in Tokyo, Japan is a Japanese engineer who has had an impressive career in motorsport. Komatsu started his Formula 1 career back in 2003 with British American Racing and since then, has made the necessary strides to become the Haas F1 team principal. Ayao Komatsu was born on January 28th 1976 in Tokyo, Japan. In 1995, 19 year old Komatsu moved to the United Kingdom to attend Loughborough University where he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Engineering as well as obtained a PhD in Vehicle Dynamics and Control. In 2003, his passion for motorsport engineering led him to his first F1 related job as a tire engineer for British American Racing.

Career and Achievements

After finishing his university studies, Ayao Komatsu started his motorsport career in 2003 as a tire engineer for British American Racing. After two years with the Brackley team, Komatsu furthered his resume by moving to Renault in 2006 to work as a performance engineer. Once he put in the work with the test team, Komatsu was later promoted to the race team and had the opportunity to work with many notable drivers such as Nelson Piquet Jr., Romain Grosjean and Vitaly Petrov.

During the 2011 season, Komatsu was promoted to be Vitaly Petrov’s race engineer following the departure of Mark Slade. Komatsu and Petrov worked together for only one year before partnering with Romain Grosjean for 2012. Together, Komatsu and Grosjean were able to score nine podium finishes, and were nearly fighting for race wins by the end of the 2013 season. In 2015, Ayao Komatsu was promoted again to chief race engineer at Lotus, where he was able to lead the team to another podium finish at the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix.

When Romain Grosjean departed Lotus to move to the Haas F1 team, Ayao Komatsu followed suit and joined him. Komatsu later became the trackside engineering director for the team in 2016 and stayed within that role up until 2023. In December of 2023, it was announced that Guenther Steiner would be replaced by Ayao Komatsu as the Haas F1 Team Principal at the start of the 2024 season.
