Carlos Sainz takes pole as Checo is eliminated Q1 during his home race

Carlos Sainz will start on pole ahead of Max Verstappen at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez

It was a return to Mexico City - Sergio Perez's home race - that was already full of surprises in practice. Here's what happened when teams finally fought for pole position:

  • Oscar Piastri failed to stay within track limits, leading to a deleted lap and a Q1 elimination for failing to put together a fast enough lap
  • Sergio Perez, the hometown here, was in a similar situation. The Mexican driver failed to escape the bottom 5 and was eliminated in Q1 in P18
  • Max Verstappen radioed to the team early in Q2 that there was low grip with his rear tires. The Dutchman was in P1 at the time and finished that round in P2
  • Q2 came to a crashing halt, literally, as Yuki Tsunoda locked up and ran wide into the barrier of turn 12. The crash red flagged the round with 10 seconds left and put a stop to everything. It eliminated Yuki along with teammate Liam Lawson, both Aston Martins, and Valtteri Bottas
  • In the final round, Max Verstappen's first lap was deleted for track limits. It had been enough to put him P2 behind Carlos Sainz who put up a mega time that kept him clear of Charles Leclerc by 0.360s
  • It all came down to the final 2 minutes. Carlos Sainz improved his time further to retain pole position, while Max Verstappen and Lando Norris improved to finish P2 and P3, respectively
