How F1 conquered the American market

In 2005, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway witnessed a disastrous United States Grand Prix with only six cars starting due to tire issues, marking a low point for Formula 1 in the country. However, in recent years, F1 has successfully re-established itself in the United States with races in Austin, Miami, and now Las Vegas. The growth can be partly attributed to the popularity of the Netflix series "Drive to Survive," which has significantly increased viewership. Despite facing some controversies, the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix signifies F1's ambitious expansion in the American market, highlighting a remarkable turnaround from the sport's struggles in the past.

GM officially registered to become an F1 engine manufacturer

General Motors proudly announced their registration as a Formula 1 engine manufacturer to supply Andretti Cadillac beginning in 2028. GM President Mark Reuss said: “With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world.” While GM’s announcement is a positive for Andretti, their authorization to join the grid is still pending a commercial agreement with Formula One Management (FOM).

Alfa Romeo overhauling current concept ahead of 2024

Alfa Romeo has decided to develop an entirely new Formula 1 car for 2024, acknowledging the limitations of its current C43 model, which struggled to meet expectations during the current season. The team, set to return to the Sauber name in 2024 and transition to Audi in 2026, faced challenges as drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu earned only 16 points collectively, leaving the team in ninth place in the constructors' championship. The decision to pursue a fresh direction with the C44 comes after an evaluation at the team's Hinwil base led by new technical director James Key, who joined in September. Alfa Romeo aims to address weaknesses and deliver a more competitive car for the upcoming season, emphasizing the importance of consistency and improved performance in various conditions.

The $500 million F1 Las Vegas gamble

The buzz around the upcoming 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix is growing. What makes this race noteworthy is that Formula 1 is handling the promotion itself, a departure from the usual model where independent promoters pay millions for the privilege. This arrangement is set to continue for at least 10 years.
