Formula 1 is finally back at the Circuit of the Americas for the United States Grand Prix. the drivers only get one practice session since this weekend is a Sprint Race weekend. See what happened during the session:
- After Singapore, Visa Cash App Racing Bulls announced that Liam Lawson will be replacing Daniel Ricciardo for the remainder of the 2024 season
- The Circuit of the Americas (COTA), was recently repaved which has implications with the tire grip
- Many drivers ran wide during the session as they look to find the sweet spots on the newly resurfaced track
- Pierre Gasly had a spin at Turn 1 early on in the session but was able to recover it and continue on track
- Similarly, Lewis Hamilton also had a spin but it was much faster than Gasly's
- Hamilton encouraged the team to check the floor and tires for any damage
- This is the only practice session that the drivers get as it is a sprint race weekend in Austin
- Sprint Qualifying will take place later today
- Lawson is looking comfortable in the VCARB as he finished the session in P13
- Oscar Piastri seemed to struggle the majority of the practice session but was able to put his McLaren in P5
- Ferrari and Red Bull seem to be in top form as both teams ran near the front for the entirety of the session
- With five minutes left in the session, a virtual safety car was deployed briefly, but the reasoning is unknown
- Carlos Sainz topped the session ahead of his teammate, Charles Leclerc, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen
