Russell claimed pole position in Vegas after Sergio Perez suffered another disappointing qualifying result

The highly anticipated qualifying session got underway in Las Vegas! The cooler track temperatures are sure to make things difficult for hte drivers and it could be anyones game. Mercedes were looking the strongest throughout the practice sessions but will they be able to convert it into a pole position? See what happened in the session and who will start at the front of the grid:

  • George Russell was the only driver out on track to start with medium tires
  • Ferrari took their time to set a lap with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz not setting times until the final six minutes of Q1
  • Lance Stroll made it out into Q1 just in time for one lap after he experienced technical issues in FP3 which resulted in him stopping on track and bringing out the red flag
  • Sergio Perez was struggling to set a time
    • He was eliminated in Q1 and will start the Grand Prix in P16
  • Guanyu Zhou made it through to Q2 where he put his Sauber in P13 on the grid for the Grand Prix
  • Franco Colapinto out-qualified his teammate, Alex Albon, and finished the session in P14 while Albon finished in P18
  • Max Verstappen was really making something out of nothing as he continued to put in strong laps despite being out driven by almost every other driver
    • Looking at the track dominance chart, Max Verstappen was always on the back foot around the track and only looked strong in the tighter corners
  • Q2 was very exciting with Guanyu Zhou finishing the session in P13
  • Liam Lawson was out-qualified by his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, and was only able to put his VCARB in P15
  • Franco Colapinto had a big crash at the very end of Q2, which delayed Q3 by a few minutes
    • It was a big shunt and his Williams was destroyed
    • This caused a delay for Q3 because of all the debris on track
  • Q3 started 20 minutes after Colapinto's crash, but the cars finally got out on track to fight it out for pole position
  • Yuki Tsunoda made it into Q3, out-qualifying his teammate, and was able to put his VCARB in P6 on the grid for the Grand Prix
  • Lewis Hamilton had a big lock up during his first run in Q3 and had to abandon his lap and pit for new tires
  • Pierre Gasly made it into Q3 and had an impressive result by putting his Alpine in P3 on the grid
  • George Russell claimed pole ahead of Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly
