Lando Norris claimed pole position ahead of George Russell and Yuki Tsunoda in the postponed qualifying session following five red flags
After qualifying was delayed all day on Saturday and then finally postponed until Sunday morning, the drivers were finally able to take to the track for the session. The weather was still quite difficult and the drivers went out on full wet tires in Q1. See what happened in the session:
- The drivers all took to the track using a set of full wet tires
- If qualifying wasn't able to take place, it was said that the results from Free Practice 1 would set the grid for the Grand Prix on Sunday
- If some some drivers weren't able to set a time within qualifying, it was suspected that the FIA would use their time from FP1 or SQUALI, which created room for tons of debate over whether that is a fair thing to do considering both of those sessions were dry and any time set within the qualifying session would be significantly slower
- Despite the weather conditions, the drivers were able to set times and create the grid for the race later on Sunday
- In Q1, Franco Colapinto went into the wall with 8 minutes left in the session
- This briefly red flagged qualifying, but the marshalls cleaned up the mess quickly and the session was resumed
- Ollie Bearman out-qualified Nico Hulkenberg, but overall, Haas did not perform well in qualifying at all
- Hulkenberg will start P19 and Bearman will start P17
- Lewis Hamilton, arguably one of the best drivers in wet conditions, was unable to produce a solid lap and was eliminated from Q1
- The Brit will start in P16 for the Grand Prix
- Lando Norris finished Q1 in P15, just on the brink of being eliminated
- The McLaren driver seemed to struggle on track because of the wet conditions
- Oscar Piastri was the first driver out on track for Q2 and was brave enough to try the intermediate tires
- Carlos Sainz brought out the red flag in Q2 after putting his Ferrari in the barriers
- Race control resumed the session with five minutes left in Q2
- Lando Norris seemed to be on the back foot for the entirety of the session and then in the final stages of Q2, was able to set a lap that put him at the top of the leaderboard
- Lance Stroll went off in the first sector which brought out the yellow flag and then the red flag
- This ended Q2 one minute early
- Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez got caught in the red flags and were unable to set solid times
- Verstappen was only able to put his car in P12, and he has a five place grid penalty for the race
- Perez put his Red Bull in P13 for the Grand Prix
- Despite both Red Bull's being eliminated in Q2, both RB drivers made it into Q3
- Q3 had a very exciting lineup with Alex Albon, Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll and both RB drivers making it into the session
- Fernando Alonso became the fourth car to go off the track and into the barriers which brought out the fourth red flag of the qualifying session
- The drivers continued to struggle on track with almost ever car sliding around the circuit
- Alex Albon brought out the fifth red flag after having a major collision into the barriers with three and a half minutes left in Q3
- Lando Norris claimed pole position ahead of George Russell and Yuki Tsunoda
